Tips on drawing animals by NadiavanderDonk Tips on drawing animals by NadiavanderDonk
I had deleted my previous tutorial a while ago because I was not happy with how I explained things... It really felt like was rewriting an anatomy book. And I really am not going to do that, or make a - how to draw an animal- tutorial when there is plenty. So instead I just share my own tips and information on how I do my animal studies. I was going to make a 5th tip but I did not know anything to write. So if you have suggestions , just comment on the comments below!

Hope its helpful. :)

On Amazon com it was possible to look through some of the pages of that third book. Looks great! Bought it on amazon UK and it's already on the way =^_^=

Seriously laughed at the sausage cats! =D
They look so amusing! (In a good way! )

Ah I have one of those books, the first one, as well as many others. I have the middle one in my "saved for later" on amazon. The third is new to me, it looks good!

It's always nice to see how others draw, be it a "this is how animals are constructed" to "this is how I build up my drawing from sketch to clean lines" and so on =)
I love seeing something as basic as a step by step of their art without any words, just see how they build up and how it evolves. Can learn a lot from it.

Great tips! This tut. helps a lot! I draw cats and study their anatomy but it doesn't want into my brain :3 It's like " the information goes into my head and some seconds later isn't there anymore :("

yeah its hard to study anatomy if you don't understand. Those muscles and bones create the animal. The fur/skin is just a wrapper. I always had trouble to get my horse heads right, but after I draw the skull and then drew the eyes, muzzle etc on top it got much easier :)

I love anatomy so much right now, I dont even mind see skinned/dissected animal bodies because I view it differently. xD lol

Beautiful sketches and awesome simple tutorial! (I'm proud to say that I have one of those books and it is indeed extremely helpful, plus it's eye candy to look at.) I also would have added that humans also possess the same basic bone structure as animals - I find that helps people who draw animals (and vice versa) learn to draw the other. :) We look different but we have all the same basic bones! :D

that is true. humans and animals share same skeleton build, all thanks to evolution :) You can learn the same technique with humans but I secretly class them a bit different because with humans you need really good precision in the anatomy and proportions and symmertry. With animals you can easily make tiny mistake (like a eye little too high, hoof too big) and barely anybody will notice. Make a little mistake with human drawing , everyone will see!

That's true! But it's easier to make the bridge between classifications (us vertical things) and (them four legged things) if you know that the bone structure is actually the same. At least so far as I have found. Humans aren't so hard once you know that. I began life as an 'animal artist' but because I had to draw a lot of naked people and make the analogous skeleton connection through studying the living, breathing anatomy, I find humans far easier to draw now. The bones may carry different shapes (and some are missing, like in horses which only have one finger/toe) but the joint placements are exactly the same. :) And mistakes in human anatomy aren't that glaring to the average joe. The trick with everything is practice! :D

yep! i find human anatomy easy too! its thanks to a lot of gesture drawings. but I still have a hard time with the head. My faces always look like Voldemort XDDD

Im planning to take figure classes in October so I hope I will get better at that. I really want to learn human drawing. :)

I don't understand premium content. -.- Is it like paying you to see the artwork but in points and not real money?

" This is completely free for anyone.. but...If you would like to support me (I took much time to create this) you can donate a little tip via the premium content (you get a thank you picture) on the right side --->"

Its not like its hard to read the description...

I understood that. What I meant was in general. Why did Deviantart make a premium content feature? I know your reason is for support, but would that be everyone's reason? :? Sorry, just a question. Didn't mean to sound like I wasn't paying attention. T~T I do read and listen.

Da invented it so people can make money. So like selling wallpapers, adoptables, templates, texture packs, stock images etc. You pay with points, and those points will be converted into money (DA takes 20% fee)
